Benefits of Bilberry-GrapeSeed

The components of Bilberry that exert its powerful biological actions are polyphenols called anthocyanins (a.k.a. anthocyanidins) and anthocyanosides. Anthocyanidins are antioxidants, which capture free radicals to prevent cellular damage. They also bind very tightly with collagenous structures in a 5:1 ratio, strengthening the collagen by 10 times against collagenase (an enzyme that breaks down collagen). The applications of Bilberry extracts are incredible, from disease prevention to athletic performance enhancement.

Improving vision

  • Night vision. Bilberry improves night vision by stimulating the production of rhodopsin, also called eye purple, in the retina. The anthocyans are precursors to the rhodopsin, which is an essential element for night vision.
  • Cataracts and macular degeneration. Today, growing evidence indicates that free radicals cause cataracts. That means that antioxidants may prevent them.
  • Diabetic eye damage. The increased production of rhodopsin, combined with bilberry’s capillary-protective effect, work together to improve eye integrity.
  • Eye fatigue. Bilberry helps regenerate rhodopsin (retina’s pigment). It improves circulation and the flow of nutrients to the eye. Its powerful antioxidants protect against the toxins in polluted air and possible radiation damage from the computer screen.

Circulatory effects
Bilberry interacts directly with collagen fibers, increasing the cross-link between them. Because of this effect on collagen, bilberry strengthens capillary permeability, preventing leakage. It can therefore dramatically improve peripheral circulation. The strengthening of capillaries helps prevent the aggravation of varicose veins. People prone to bruising will benefit from this also.

Beneficial Effects of Grapeseed Extract
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) are oligomeric flavonoids. OPCs are found in foods such as grapes, pine bark and cranberries. The grape seed extract used in AOR’s Bilberry-Grapeseed contains 85% OPC’s, making it a highly concentrated and highly effective extract. OPCs are powerful antioxidants and have a variety of beneficial properties.

  • Protects LDL from oxidation: Oxidation of LDL is implicated in the development of atherosclerotic plaques.
  • Antiallergic / Anti-inflammatory activity: OPCs inhibit mast cell degradation (hence prevent the release of histamine, bradykinin and serotonin), which mediates inflammatory and allergic reactions, edema, and other conditions. OPCs also inhibit hyaluronidase activation. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that attacks various tissues during inflammation and is implicated in the various vascular problems and even the spread of cancer cells!
  • Vascular protection: OPCs have a particular affinity for the arterial walls and thus offer vascular protection. OPCs have been shown to prevent the weakening of arterial cell walls. In Europe, grapeseed extracts have been prescribed to prevent capillary fragility, to heal varicose veins and hemorrhoids and to prevent edema.

Free radicals and grape seed proanthocyanidin extract: importance in human health and disease prevention.
Bagchi D, Bagchi M, Stohs SJ, Das DK, Ray SD, Kuszynski CA, Joshi SS, Pruess HG. Toxicology. 2000 Aug 7;148(2-3):187-97.

Free radicals have been implicated in over a hundred disease conditions in humans, including arthritis, hemorrhagic shock, atherosclerosis, advancing age, ischemia and reperfusion injury of many organs, Alzheimer and Parkinson's disease, gastrointestinal dysfunctions, tumor promotion and carcinogenesis, and AIDS. Antioxidants are potent scavengers of free radicals and serve as inhibitors of neoplastic processes. A large number of synthetic and natural antioxidants have been demonstrated to induce beneficial effects on human health and disease prevention. However, the structure-activity relationship, bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of the antioxidants differ extensively. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins, naturally occurring antioxidants widely available in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, flowers and bark, have been reported to possess a broad spectrum of biological, pharmacological and therapeutic activities against free radicals and oxidative stress. We have assessed the concentration- or dose-dependent free radical scavenging ability of a novel IH636 grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) both in vitro and in vivo models, and compared the free radical scavenging ability of GSPE with vitamins C, E and beta-carotene. These experiments demonstrated that GSPE is highly bioavailable and provides significantly greater protection against free radicals and free radical-induced lipid peroxidation and DNA damage than vitamins C, E and beta-carotene. GSPE was also shown to demonstrate cytotoxicity towards human breast, lung and gastric adenocarcinoma cells, while enhancing the growth and viability of normal human gastric mucosal cells. The comparative protective effects of GSPE, vitamins C and E were examined on tobacco-induced oxidative stress and apoptotic cell death in human oral keratinocytes. Oxidative tissue damage was determined by lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation, while apoptotic cell death was assessed by flow cytometry. GSPE provided significantly better protection as compared to vitamins C and E, singly and in combination. GSPE also demonstrated excellent protection against acetaminophen overdose-induced liver and kidney damage by regulating bcl-X(L) gene, DNA damage and presumably by reducing oxidative stress. GSPE demonstrated excellent protection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and myocardial infarction in rats. GSPE was also shown to upregulate bcl(2) gene and downregulate the oncogene c-myc. Topical application of GSPE enhances sun protection factor in human volunteers, as well as supplementation of GSPE ameliorates chronic pancreatitis in humans. These results demonstrate that GSPE provides excellent protection against oxidative stress and free radical-mediated tissue injury.

Procyanidins from Vitis vinifera seeds display cardioprotection in an experimental model of ischemia-reperfusion damage.
Berti F, Manfredi B, Mantegazza P, Rossoni G. Drugs Exp Clin Res. 2003;29(5-6):207-16.

Since the early 1970s, increasing evidence has suggested that the consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol is inversely correlated with mortality from myocardial infarction. There is also some evidence that the protective effects of wine might be more pronounced than those of other alcoholic beverages. These observations prompted us to investigate the cardioprotective activity of Vitis vinifera seeds in experimental ischemia-reperfusion injury. An isolated rabbit heart preparation paced electrically was used to evaluate the effects of a highly purified, high molecular weight fraction of oligomeric procyanidins isolated from Vitis vinifera seeds on myocardial reperfusion injury after 40 min of low-flow (1 ml/min) ischemia. Infusion of the heart with 100 or 200 microg/ml procyanidins dose-dependently reduced left ventricular end-diastolic pressure during ischemia, decreased coronary perfusion pressure, improved cardiac mechanical performance upon reperfusion, increased the release of 6-Keto-prostaglandin F1alpha into the perfusate in both the preischemic and the reperfusion periods and suppressed rhythm irregularity. Procyanidins dose-dependently relaxed human internal mammary aortic (IMA) rings (with intact endothelium) precontracted with norepinephrine. This effect was completely abolished in IMA-rings without functional endothelium or when this vascular tissue was pretreated with nitric oxide synthase inhibitor (NG-monomethyl-L-arginine) or with guanylate cyclase inhibitor (1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one). In conclusion, these results indicate that procyanidins could be of therapeutical potential in cardiovascular diseases. However, further investigations are required for a better definition of the mode of action of these oligomers.

Anthocyanosides of Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) for night vision--a systematic review of placebo-controlled trials.

Canter PH, Ernst E. Surv Ophthalmol. 2004 Jan-Feb;49(1):38-50.

We have systematically reviewed placebo-controlled trials of V. myrtillus-extracted anthocyanosides for evidence of positive effects on night vision. Searches of computerized databases and citations in retrieved articles identified 30 trials with outcome measures relevant to vision in reduced light. Of these, 12 were placebo-controlled. The 4 most recent trials were all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and were negative in outcome. A fifth RCT and 7 non-randomized controlled trials reported positive effects on outcome measures relevant to night vision. Negative outcome was associated with more rigorous methodology but also with lower dose level and extracts from geographically distinct sources that may differ in anthocyanoside composition. Healthy subjects with normal or above average eyesight were tested in 11 of the 12 trials. The hypothesis that V. myrtillus anthocyanosides improves normal night vision is not supported by evidence from rigorous clinical studies. There is a complete absence of rigorous research into the effects of the extract on subjects suffering impaired night vision due to pathological eye conditions. Evidence from methodologically weaker trials and auxiliary evidence from animal studies, trials of synthetic anthocyanosides, and a recent randomized controlled trial of Ribes nigrum (black currant) anthocyanosides may warrant further trials of V. myrtillus anthocyanosides in subjects with impaired night vision.

Bilberry-Grapeskin is a standardized Swedish bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus, 25% antocyanosides) and grapeskin polyphenol supplement. These flavonoid antioxidants support visual function. Anthocyanisides have a high affinity for the retinal-pigmented epith
