Prostate Health
Prostate health is a major concern for all men, especially as they get older. More than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life. These prostate conditions include an enlarged prostate (BPH), prostatitis and prostate cancer. Over 50% of men in their 60’s and as many as 90% of men in their 70’s and older have symptoms of BPH. Prostatitis can affect men at all ages, but is especially common in older men, affecting 35% of men over 50. The most serious prostate condition is prostate cancer. Each year 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 30,000 will die of it. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer as well as the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in men in Western countries. It is very important for men to take care of their prostate. The good news is that there are many natural products that can help to reduce the symptoms of prostate problems, as well as reduce the risk of developing them in the first place.

Lycopene
Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes which has been researched extensively for its benefits for prostate health. The majority of research on lycopene has focused on its anti-cancer properties, particularly in regards to prostate cancer. Multiple studies have found a strong association between lycopene intake and a reduced risk of prostate cancer. One study examining the dietary intake and incidence of prostate cancer in a group approximately 44,000 individuals over the course of six years found that individuals with the highest intake of lycopene had a significantly reduced risk of developing prostate cancer compared o those with the lowest intake. The results showed an almost 35% lower risk for individuals consuming 10 or more servings of tomato products per week, with the protective effects being strongest in cases of more advanced prostate cancer. These results were not observed for any other carotenoid, including retinol and beta-carotene.

Lycopene has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of hormone refractory metastatic prostate cancer. Supplementation with lycopene for 3 months resulted in reduced or stabilized PSA levels in 85% of patients. Furthermore, lower urinary tract symptoms and bone pain were improved in 61% and 62% of patients respectively. Another prospective randomized trial obtained a better survival rate with the addition of lycopene to orchiectomy (removal of the testicles) as compared to orchiectomy alone. These results support a role of lycopene not only in the prevention of cancer, but as an adjunct treatment for prostate cancer.

SGS (Sulforaphane)
The consumption of leafy green vegetables has been associated with a reduced incidence of cancer.Research has indicated that this cancer preventative action is linked to compounds called isothiocyanates. One such isothiocyanate is Sulforaphane glucosinolate. This natural compound found in broccoli has been shown to inhibit tumor formation and support healthy detoxification.

Sulforaphane is a potent inducer of phase II detoxification enzymes, which are the enzymes in the liver responsible for the detoxification of toxins and carcinogens. Enhanced Phase II detoxification greatly assists the body in reducing the overall toxic burden as well as affording substantial other health benefits in immune function, heart health, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The most widely studied aspect of sulforaphane is its potential as an anti-cancer agent.  Sulforaphane’s anti-cancer effect is attributed to the stimulation of phase II enzymes, apoptosis (cell suicide), cell cycle arrest (preventing replication), reduction of the spread of tumours (metastases) and the inhibition of blood supply to cancer cells (angiogenesis).

Selenium and Zinc
Zinc and selenium are both important minerals for prostate health, and both have powerful antioxidant properties. Zinc is of particular importance to the prostate, where it is present in high concentrations. Prostate cancer has been associated with decreased levels of zinc in malignant prostate cells. Zinc and selenium are key minerals in the maintenance and repair of DNA. Selenium is an important component of proteins required for genomic stability, and zinc is essential in several key DNA-binding proteins. Selenium has a well-established reputation as a potent cancer-fighting trace mineral. Areas of the world with more selenium-rich soil have lower cancer rates, and a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the 1990s showed that men taking a daily 200 microgram selenium supplement experienced a 37% lower risk of developing new cancer, and a whopping 50% lower risk of cancer death.

Green Tea Extract (EGCG)
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein secreted by the prostate gland. The most common cause for an elevated PSA is BPH, but PSA is a measurement for prostate cancer as well. Rising PSA levels have been shown to correlate with prostate cancer metastasis. EGCG has been shown to decrease PSA levels for up to 2-4 weeks after a single administration.

EGCG is also a powerful antioxidant, and is well known for its anti-cancer activity. Research in experimental animals has found green tea or its extracts to be effective against chemically-induced cancers of the lung, breast, colon, liver, and skin, as well as a variety of gastrointestinal organs, cancers induced by chemical carcinogens; more excitingly, green tea extracts have been found to protect animals from existing, spontaneous prostate cancer.
