  • In a 1988 study on the prevalence of magnesium deficiency, it was reported that “magnesium is the most under-diagnosed electrolyte abnormality.” In 2004, it was estimated that almost half of Canadians do not consume enough magnesium. On top of that, magnesium can be over excreted due to high consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol, carbonated beverages, processed foods and certain prescription drugs, making the number of people with deficiencies likely much higher.

    Why Is Magnesium So Important?

The mineral magnesium is involved in at least 300 essential biochemical reactions including testosterone production, insulin sensitivity, calcium absorption, bone health, mood balance, regulation of the sympathetic nervous system, immunity and protein synthesis, among others. Many people are deficient in magnesium, leaving the body vulnerable to stress, fatigue, illness, poor recovery from injury, nerve and cardiovascular problems.

    Effective Magnesium Supplementing

Magnesium is not easily absorbed in the body unless first attached to a transporting substance. For this reason, many supplements provide magnesium that forms a complex with organic acids or a chelate with amino acids. Advanced Magnesium Complex is a quality formula that combines four highly bioavailable sources of magnesium into one comprehensive magnesium supplement to account for variable body chemistry and to ensure your body’s magnesium needs are met.

Who Is At Risk for Magnesium Deficiency?

At least 50% of adults consume less magnesium than they should. The daily recommended intake for women is about 320 mg and about 420 mg for men. In addition to not getting enough, people who consume high amounts of coffee, tea, alcohol, carbonated beverages and processed foods are at higher risk of deficiency. In addition, over excretion can occur in older adults, those with gastrointestinal disorders involving diarrhea and fat malabsorption, type 2 diabetes, kidney disorders and those taking diuretics (a class of blood pressure medications) or proton pump inhibitors (a type of heartburn medication).

    Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency

Because only about 1% of magnesium is found in the blood while the rest is stored in the bone and soft tissues, magnesium deficiencies cannot be accurately determined by a blood test. Symptoms generally are the first sign of a deficiency. Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, headaches, PMS, nausea, fatigue, weakness and kidney stones. An ongoing magnesium deficiency can lead to more serious symptoms, including: numbness and tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, personality changes, migraines, sleep disturbances, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms and coronary spasms.

    Effective Supplementation

It is clear that many people could benefit from a magnesium supplement, so it is important to ensure that you are taking an effective form of magnesium. Magnesium is not easily absorbed in the body unless first attached to a transporting substance. For this reason, many magnesium supplements provide a magnesium chelate or complex or a mineral salt. For example, magnesium glycinate is an amino acid chelate, magnesium ascorbate is an organic acid complex and magnesium oxide is a mineral salt. Quality depends on the amount of magnesium in the supplement and how bioavailable it is. Bioavailability refers to the amount of magnesium in the
supplement that can be assimilated by the digestive system and used for cellular activity and health benefit. For example, magnesium oxide is almost insoluble in water and the body does not absorb it very well, while magnesium citrate is quite soluble and is absorbed very well.

Maximize Your Magnesium with Advanced Magnesium Complex

Advanced Magnesium Complex provides 300 mg a day of magnesium from four bioavailable sources: the chelate magnesium glycinate, and three organic acid complexes. In addition, each magnesium source compound confers additional health benefits, allowing you to reap the greatest benefits for your magnesium supplement.

    Magnesium Aspartate

This form of magnesium has increased bioavailability compared to oxide and even the citrate form. Magnesium aspartate has been found in clinical studies to reduce chronic fatigue, muscle weakness and fatigue associated with stress, gastrointestinal disturbances, menopause, the postpartum period, and previous infection with the flu.

    Magnesium Ascorbate

Magnesium ascorbate also provides vitamin C which supports the absorption of magnesium. The magnesium here is very bioavailable and effective in mobilizing abnormally deposited calcium throughout the body. As such, it is one of the most effective (yet least utilized) treatments available for osteoporosis. Vitamin C is important in collagen formation, bone and skin health, blood vessel function, immunity and detoxification.

    Magnesium Malate

Since malate is a substrate in the cellular energy cycle, it can help improve ATP production, and there is some preliminary evidence that it may reduce muscle pain and tender points in fibromyalgia patients. Since magnesium also helps stabilize ATP for use in the body, this form of magnesium is a win-win for energy production. As well, malic acid is a potent aluminum chelator.

    Magnesium Glycinate

This combination has good bioavailability and does not have a laxative effect since glycine is actively transported through the intestinal wall. It also does not cause constipation. Due to the calming and relaxing effect of both glycine and magnesium, this combination has been used successfully for helping to alleviate chronic pain, muscle hypertonicity and mood imbalances.

Magnesium can interact with bisphosphonates and certain antibiotics, making them less effective, so make sure to take them at least 2 hours apart or more.
